jhani is a collaborator, counterdisciplinary maker, and editor
Jhani’s creative works are interested in precarity, queer ecology, interspecies friendships, diaspora and
migration, spiritual activism, and fugue states.
Author of the California Book Award winning collection Time Regime (Gaudy Boy, 2022) and a co-founding editor of the experimental arts project rivulet (now on hiatus), Jhani received their M.A. from SOAS, University of London. Their research orbits “dangerous” intimacies in colonial archives and “creative refusals” within, against, and in the formation of memory-keeping communities and institutions.

They have coordinated projects and facilitated programming with organizations such as QueerAsia, Q. M. Zhang | MemoryWorks, May We Gather, Ito Center Editions (Kaya Press), the Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture, the Japanese American National Museum. Jhani curretly co-edits Kulhar Books (an imprint of Kaya Press).
If you would like to discuss a collaborative working opportunity, or would like to invite Jhani as a speaker, facilitator, or workshop leader, please post your query using their contact form.

If you are seeking permissions to use Jhani’s writing or imagery for curricula, reviews, anthologized publication, reprinting, or otherwise, please post your query through this contact form.

Thank you!

“This book is a rare page-turner that demands radical inclusivity from the breath of a brilliant writer. These pages wrangle with the divergent tools to awaken everyone who dares to be part of the poet’s experiment.” —CAConrad

“[With] Randhawa’s visionary, encyclopedic attention, part laboratory, part love letter, part auto-ecology, Time Regime is poetry as the process—and the art—of critical and selfless world-restoration.” —Brandon Shimoda

“The language of Jhani Randhawa takes down the toxic tendrils of time as it makes space for wild emergent conversations and landscapes. It is a feat, a feast, a fight.” —Sawako Nakayasu

Jhani Randhawa’s Time Regime was selected by Dr. Dorothy Wang as the 2021 winner of the Gaudy Boy Poetry Book Prize, and was published in April 2022 by Gaudy Boy, a literary imprint of the non-profit Singapore Unbound.

The collection was selected as Gold Medal Winner in Poetry at the 92nd Annual California Book Awards (2023). Read the full press release here.

Jhani is contributing author of “Semaphore” in A Mouth Holds Many Things (Fonograf Editions/De-Canon Project, 2024), an anthology edited by Dao Strom and Jyothi Natarajan that collects hybrid-literary works from 36 women and nonbinary BIPOC writer-artists. This collection illuminates and expands the interstitial spaces where text blends, blurs, and morphs with visual and other media.

A project website featuring artist profiles and more about the contributors to A Mouth Holds Many Things can be found here.

June 2024“Dream Baby Dream: Queer Worldmaking” closing of The World That Belongs to Us
New Art Gallery Walsall (Walsall, UK)

Jhani participated in a brief artist conversation and presented new writing alongside Candice Nembhard for “Dream Baby Dream,” the closing programme for The World That Belongs to Us (November 24, 2023–June 9, 2024) exhibition, curated by Aziz Sohail and Deborah Robinson.

Through talks, poetry and performance bringing together cultural practitioners from all over the UK, this closing programme "Dream Baby Dream" unraveled threads of queer themes within the project, sustained through the decades of organising, friendship and worldmaking. We contextualised the exhibition within a history of queer cultural production and organising in Britain from the perspective of South Asian and other diasporic communities. In doing so, we centred dreaming as an act and strategy of making queer diasporic life possible and visible.

Speakers: Rohit Dasgupta, Saima Razzaq (Birmingham Pride), Yasmyn Nettle, Candice Nembhard, and Jhani Randhawa.

Jhani’s experimental video essay “Along the Grain: Presence-ing Diasporic-Settler Masculinized Memory” (2024) was presented in “The Act of Making Home,” an onsite and virtual exhibition curated and presenting works by twelve postgradaute students in the ‘African and Asian Diasporas: Culture, Politics, Identities’ module led by Dr. Hannah Bennett and Dr. Giulia Casentini at SOAS, University of London.

The exhibition traversed the collective, complex processes of creating a sense of home within the learning for migration and diasporas. Through diverse mediums, the featured artists explored the multifaceted experiences of cultural identity, belonging, and the reimagining of home in a globalised context. This exhibition was a tapestry of narratives, each revealing the resilience, adaptation, and creativity inherent in the diaspora journey. It explored how cultural practices construct and thus express personal and collective identities.

Artist Jagdeep Raina’s solo exhibition “Beautiful Zameen,” hosted by California State University Bakersfield’s Todd Madigan Gallery, curated by Jedediah Caesar.
Jhani was invited by Jagdeep Raina to compose a response to the works in “Beautiful Zameen,” and to join him in conversation at the opening event at CSU Bakersfield’s Todd Madigan Gallery. After a screening of Ali Kazimi’s Narmada: A Valley Rises (1994) at the March 16, 2023 exhibition opening, Jhani and Jagdeep engaged Bakersfield community members as well as CSU Bakersfield students and faculty around local relationships to water rights and community-responsive artworks.

Jhani is currently collaborating with Jagdeep, PS Guelph, Musagetes, and Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto to publish a collection of essays, poetry, and prose alongside images of Jagdeep’s works. The resulting book, Beautiful Zameen, is forthcoming in May 2026.
